Comme des Garçons
Founded in Japan in 1969 by Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garçons transformed the language of fashion through a radical approach to form, construction and the very concept of beauty. Following the official establishment of the company in 1973, its Paris debut in 1981 introduced an international audience to an aesthetic built on asymmetry, unexpected volumes, deconstruction and experimentation. Rei Kawakubo continues to lead the Maison’s artistic direction, using clothing as a field of research rather than simply a functional object. Materials, proportions and structures are continually questioned, giving rise to collections that challenge convention. Comme des Garçons approaches fashion as a form of thought, preserving an independent, conceptual identity in constant evolution.
